For the last week I have been unable to download anything
from the via the web interface.

I have used both the vintage interface and the new one you
are redirected to on SSL

The problem occurs with binaries, txt and picture groups.
With the picture groups the thumbnails load but clicking for
an enlarged image gives a timeout message

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
fra-dl-03.easynews.com:444."

this also happems with IE and on fra-dl-01 etc. I cannot add
to zip or create nzb files either.

What is the problem?

Cheers

Easynews uses port 81 for non-secure connections and 443 for
secure connections,
https://www.easynews.com/faq.html#easynewsHTTP I don't know
where the "444" is coming from but you could try changing it
to the 81 or 443 in your browser's URL box and re-try. It's
not a long-term fix, but it might get you working for the
short term.

Thanks for that, C++.

When I copy the url connected to the thumbnail I get
Loading Image...

If I change the port 81 to 80 or 443 I get the full size image. It's a
band aid until an Easynews mod fixes or gives a reply

Using the Preferred Port settings in the Preferences, a user has the
ability to set the default download port to ports 443, 444, 445, 446,
447, and 448. These are all Secure ports.

He saw that '444' output because that is the selection that was made in
those settings at the time of the initial download.

I haven't been able to reproduce any issues downloading over the secure
port, 444 (using alt.binaries.pictures.rail as my reference group:
https://members.easynews.com/2.0/indexes/idx?group=alt.binaries.pictures.rail&hthm=1&hInfo=1&pno=1&sf=0&sc=1&skp=1&it=1&s1d=-&s1=dayDec&s2=nfromDec&s3=nsubjectDec&sS=1)

Can you give me an example newsgroup that is exhibiting this behavior
for you?

Sorry if it wasn't very clear, I was replying to both C++ AND benners in
the same response. I could've made it more apparent.

We support alternate TCP ports on the download servers: 81-85 for HTTP, 444-448
for HTTPS. Using the alternate ports will trigger policy based routing for the
connection, forcing you over a specific network provider instead of relying on BGP.
It fixes speed issues for some users.

Alternate ports can be set in your preferences, or you can just to
https://members.easynews.com/route/ and let the speed tester pick a port for you.

Hi benners,

This should be an easy fix once we figure out what part of the interface
you are on when seeing these issues.

Are you connecting to:
http://members.easynews.com
https://members.easynews.com
https://secure.members.easynews.com (legacy/deprecated)

Once there, what part of the interface are you using? Is it 2.0 or
vintage? If 2.0 are you searching or perusing indexes? If vintage, are
you on /global4, /global5, full indexes, old indexes?

Thanks!

This is the url I use to access the site
https://members.easynews.com/index.html?favorite=1&alpha=1

session info from above link
You're using HTTP/1.1 on port 443 (SSL)

From my preferences page, I haven't changed these in a while
Preferred Port
Choose the download server port you would like to use (For non-SSL
connections) 81

Preferred Secure Port
Choose the download server port you would like to use (For SSL connections) 443

Preferred Interface
Choose which interface you would like to default to after login Easynews
Vintage

a.b.p.wallpaper URLs
Easynews v2 interface
https://members.easynews.com/2.0/indexes/main?group=alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper

Easynews old interface
https://members.easynews.com/2.0/indexes/idx?group=alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper&sS=8&sf=0

I have the same issues which ever interface I use. I access the groups
through those saved as my favourites, I am perusing the indexes not searching.

I always use full indexes and until now never used the old or up to the
minute. The problem seems to be with the Full Indexes as with the others I
can see the thumbs and access the larger images.

Thanks all

Thanks Jason, the picture viewing and downloading (via right
click or d/l manager works fine.

The zip manager is still acting up.
Viewing a.b.p.wallpaper using the full indexes on v2.0
Select a few images to download
go to the zip manager and select download

url location of zip
http://members.easynews.com/zip/prod/fra/81/2/2-a62e7.zip

gives the error
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
fra-zip-05.easynews.com:81.

redirected url that errors
http://fra-zip-05.easynews.com:81/061223f7_CcQWWhIVAc9n656mVfqjdcapDzrpFBt9AnhWbSM6-g4rPCBNbR7yBvjpHGLrJughhVXARgQ8Lf89yYrt7oKxWrvzjO2DBhkNxD7QethasyjkG4yBoXSYQ==/2-a62e7.zip

The others are working, SSL download, Readme, NZB. I use the
SSL download anyway but just tested non SSL download for
curiosity.

Thanks all esp Jason for the help

Thanks for letting us know the first issue is resolved.

The second issue sounds like it's due to to firefox forcing your connection to HTTPS. They started doing this a while back - if Firefox knows that the website is SSL enabled, it will try to force all connections over HTTPS. The problem in this case is that its changing the protocol, but leaving the port the same. Its trying to initiate an SSL connection over a non-SSL port, it doesn't work, and you get that message.

We haven't yet figured out a graceful way to handle it on our end. We might just end up removing the regular HTTP download link on HTTPS zip manager
