..why not just use a UBB-style BBS? There are free ones out
there, I believe. This is a well-known protocol with lots of
advantages. The beta forum offers very little over its
predecessor or the newsfeed variant.

I have to agree with that, and it's a lot "uglier" (sorry guys) than most of
the bulletin board software that's out there.

Perhaps it's because they want to mirror the newsgroup postings, and no BBS
software will do that? I dunno.

I think I see why they're doing the "forum" as well... for those that are
HTTP-only users. (Am I right?)

Yes, it's for HTTP only users. You don't need your posting privileges enabled to post
from this forum. Also, if you didn't notice, the entire website is more or less plain
HTML, no big fancy style sheets or graphics. This can easily be addressed, but
keeping things simple and easy has always been the Easynews motto.

This forum pulls and posts directly from the newsgroup. Yes, we know of the web
forums that can do the newsgroups, but we know Usenet a lot better than those web
forum creators. Plus, we have all the rights to the code and know it in and out, so
we can do whatever we want with it.

Yep, I like the clean idea, I just think it looks a little, I dunno... clunky.
It's getting there though. I like the highlighting of "official" posters.
That's a good idea!

The other highlighting feature is the messages marked as New!. Those are for each
individual. Those that are New! are the threads that have gotten new posts since you last
logged into the forum.

We don't need all those extra features like user images,
moderators, etc that ubb style forums provide.

Second, the "support forum" is a mirror of easynews.support
and the posts made on the web interface also appear in that
group and vice versa.

I wouldn't mind some more feedback on how the threads are displayed on
this web forum. I could do the frames deal like google, perhaps make it
a preference. Right off the top of my head I could do some hidden
layers type setup with some mouseovers...actually I think I'll mess with
that a bit today

Either that, or like slashdot...

I made a Slashdot style back when I was first developing how the threads
should look, I'll add it again and have it be a preference now. The viewing
of threads is the way it is now because that's how godzilla told me to do it.

Bah, don't listen to him, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I'm not really sure which I prefer, I don't like web interfaces in
general, I'll stick to NNTP whenever there is a choice.

I added a javascript popup view style and slashdot style view. You can now set a
preference for the two other styles. Shoot me some feedback.

Just so you know you're not being ignored, I'll put some comments together
over the weekend (I have been intending to comment on the new forum
interface but just didn't get round to it before) I'm also highly
motivated to provide you feedback, in order that I can bask in an ironic

Thanks Stuart, I look forward to it.
First thing of course, I'm another not-fan of the colour scheme. I have a
personal preference for black text on a pastel blue background, which I
find best for extended bouts of reading on a screen (white causes me eye
strain after a while, grey/off-white is just dull and makes it look like
the brightness/contrast needs adjusting, blue is soothing) Some of the
colour combinations you've chosen are not traditionally easy to read.
Careful with the application of brown/beige - it invites an obvious
insult, unless you offset it with other colours.

You could make the 'last reply' a hyperlink to go straight to that
message.

Clicking preferences, or going to post when not logged in should go
straight to a login prompt, rather than requiring an additional click.
After that, proceeding to the originally desired page after logging in
would also save more clicks and delays.

It would be nice to be able to open more than one thread at a time (and
for them to remain open within one forum browsing session) Also marking
threads as ignored, so they would not appear in a filtered (default) view,
would be convenient. There would always be an 'unfiltered' link (or a
dropdown with different filter options - e.g. only announcement threads,
or only threads which have not recieved replies from support staff) Also
a date filter. And more threads per page.

I wonder at the layout of the forum browser, if there's a better or more
efficient way of organising it. Perhaps using colour coding to emphasise
the thread progression, with the last post darkest, and all before as
shades between. Subject, poster & latest reply might be better next to
each other (though the numbers do split things up and create a consistent
pattern, from a browsing point of view, it creates a small barrier to
linking the two most important pieces of information together)

How does the current forum browser handle a subject line change? Are they
ignored, is a seperate thread started? It might make sense to have the
subject line on each row. With an open thread, it wouldn't be necessary
to have the author displayed twice, since the last post could be
emphasised in the achual thread.

When viewing an open thread, a few lines would do wonders for emphasising
the thread progression. For an example of how to do it right, have a look
at Gravity and see if you can emulate that. Something like

Author1
|-Author2
|-Author3
|-Author1
| |-Author2
| |-Author3
|-Author1
|-Author3

I'll stop there for now I think.

nice idea, seems to work well at a first glance.
A button to expand/collapse all might be usefull in some cases.
And a scoring system with karma points for each user, and free gigs for
users with high karma ;-)

something unrelated: I noticed that the forum search is case-sensitive,
is that desired?

I wouldn't mind some more feedback on how the threads are displayed on
this web forum.
For me, it's just the layout. Perhaps it's the new times roman, or something,
but it just seems kinda... I dunno... "jumbly" is the best way I can put it.

I think you should swap the position of "poster" & "replies". I'm not sure
you need the "Thread" column. I don't know if anyone would use it other than
perhaps you guys. (Keep in mind I'm trying to think like a HTTP-only user...
someone that's not hip to newsreaders, the more "AOL-ish" user perhaps.)

The colorizing of the cells helps clean it up a lot. I think you should
change the date layout to all digits. When you get into months like
"November", the longer month name will make it look more "jumbly". I think
just "05/19/03 - 09:22pm" would be cleaner. (Leaving off the seconds will
clean it too.)

If you removed the "Thread" and condensed the date, this would probably allow
the "latest reply" to be all on one line, which would also make for a more
clean appearance.

I would also "buttonize" (using form controls) some of the commands. This
will make them pop out to the users, make them more "Here I am!" and obvious
without sacrificing load times by using graphics. If not this, then perhaps
using background or text colors to make them pop would work. Though when
thinking like someone that's only used to "click, click, click" all over the
web, folks expect buttons or radio controls, and since you've said this is
more for those that only do HTTP (which will usually be those with less
"experience" shall I say?), they're used to seeing those usual old buttons,
and will be looking for them. (It's what I call the "AOL-izing of the
internet, a general dumbing down to make the internet less scary for those
that are overwhelmed when it comes technology as complicated as setting the
clock on a VCR... and won't read the manual to find out how.)

These are just my meager ideas I'm tossing out to you. I've done a lot of web
designs over the years (for commercial sites, not just personal or the like),
and I've always been seriously into clean, simple lines with fast load times.
You have the fast & simple down (especially since there's no graphics), I just
wanted to toss out some ideas to perhaps make it more... I guess streamlined.

Simple doesn't have to mean barren, and things really can be too simple, to
where people have to search to see what's in front of their faces to pick it
out of all the other similar looking text on a page.

I hope you don't think I'm dogging out the design or acting like I know it
all, these are just my ideas to help make things better, at least IMHO. I
know what it's like doing a site. It's sometimes hard to see what you're
doing because you're so into it, almost too close to it.

Anyhoo... hope I've helped in some small way, or at least triggered some ideas
you might not have considered already. :-)
