Files ending in numbers are _usually_ "split" type files. What that
means, is that the file has simply been chopped into pieces for more
convenient posting. There has been no additional compression
applied to any of the pieces.
Sometimes posters will post RAR, ACE or other files as numbered
extensions. Usually this is because they have made some custom
installer to go along with the set of files that features incredibly
bad electronic music (note: I am a fan of electronic, this stuff is
just bad.. only musicians should make mod music) and a stupid
plasma, flame or other display. This is supposed to be an homage of
sorts to the old demo and warez scenes, but it is just frankly tired
at this point. Anyway, I digress.
If the file has two extensions, it is almost certainly a "split"
type file. fileXXX.MPG.001 would be an example of a typical split
file.
There are lots of tools to combine split files. Some are:
MasterSplitter
HJSplit
Whitsoft Splitter (my favorite. it is only 20k)
You can google for any of them to find the programs.
